NEUROTRAIN ::: PROFILE ::: LUND

The Research Team at the University of Lund consists of three senior scientists:

  • Prof. Merab KOKAIA
      [Neurology, Restorative Neurology Section]
  • Prof. Theodorus VAN VEEN
      [Department of Ophthalmology, Wallenberg Retina Centre]
  • Prof. Thadeusz WIELOCH
      [Director Experimental Brain Research, Wallenberg Neurocentrum]

Lund University (LU) is one of the organizations devoted to research and higher education in Northern Europe, and offers undergraduate, graduate and research programmes in medicine, natural sciences, and technology. LU is an active member of the Medicon Valley Academy, a virtual University of the Öresund region, where more than 19 universities and other health organizations in Denmark and Sweden are involved. Neurodegeneration has been a main research focus at Lund University during the last 60 years. Since the PhD students contribute to a significant degree to this research effort, there is a long tradition of early-stage training action in the field of neurodegeneration at LU. Neuroscience research is carried out at the Wallenberg Neuroscience Centre and Wallenberg Retina Centre, both part of a large Biomedical Centre, where collaborations among the research groups are highly stimulated. The environment at these Centres encompasses international research teams working in state-of-the-art facilities and offers access to the most up-to-date technologies and expertise in the field. The two Centres are well established and internationally widely recognized institutions in the Neuroscience field. The Centres are located next to the main building of the LU Hospital, which fosters close interaction between the basic and clinical sciences, strengthening translational activities and research. More than 40 PhD students have graduated within the partnership. This particular partnership contributes with unique in vivo and in vitro models of retinal neurodegeneration and of stroke and models of epilepsy, electrophysiological recordings from brain slices, full-field and multifocal ERG, in vivo and ex-vivo gene transfer technologies, stem cell- and tissue-based therapeutic approaches, time-lapse microscopy. The partners are currently involved in Marie Curie EST & RTN programmes, BIONEL and RETNET, the EU-sponsored programmes NeuroNE and EVI-GenoRet, a Michael J. Fox Foundation sponsored research program in Parkinson’s disease, a Foundation Fighting Blindness (USA)-sponsored programme, and are part of The Nordic Centre of Excellence in neurodegeneration, and Strong Research Environment selected by the Swedish Research Council. The latter two networks have PhD programs in Neurodegeneration and have expressed their willingness to interact with NEUROTRAIN.

LU has a modern and high capacity data communications system, with central IT expert support, providing all staff and students with Internet connection, e-mail addresses, on-line connection to all international databases, and has its own electronic library (ELIN), with subscription to major scientific on-line periodic journals, publications and on-line providers.
