NEUROTRAIN ::: PROFILE ::: MUNICH

The Research Team at the GSF in Munich is represented by the senior scientist:

  • Dr. Marius UEFFING

The GSF is a National Research Centre within the Helmholtz Society dedicated to human health and environmental research. Marius Ueffing is a Senior Group Leader at the Institute of Human Genetics of the GSF and its corresponding Clinical Institute at the University Medical Centre of the TUM. He is Head of the Proteome Core Facility within the GSF Gene Analysis Center (GAC). The GAC is an integrated facility for proteomics, gene arrays and DNA analysis. MU coordinates the German Federal Government funded National Research Cluster ‘Analysis of Membrane-coupled Protein Complexes’ focussed on developing proteomic methodology for the analysis of membrane proteins and membranous organelles and partners "INTERACTION PROTEOME" Europe's largest contracted EU research network for proteomics.

Role in project: MU contributes training and expertise in the area of human genetics, pathophysioplogy of neurodegenerative diseases, genomic and proteomic analysis. He is contributing expertise in the analysis of genetic marker analysis and biomarker discovery. He contributes data from studies on functional analysis of protein heterogeneity based on genetic variance and disease. Within this project, MU’s major contributions are (a) expertise in clinical sampling and diagnostics, preclinical and clinical human genetics, sample preparation, SOPs; (b)proteomic analysis of pathomechanisms from standardized cellular models for neuro-degeneration and primary disease affected tissue analyzed within the funded German NGFN2-Human Brain Project; (c) functional validation of genomic and proteomic data through functional cellular assays (recombinant expression, small hairpin-mediated RNAi, cell- and molecular biology. MUe has conducted two workshops within the frame of two previous EU 5th FW research networks, the latest in September 2002 as a practical training course in proteomics. He is the coordinator of a major national scientific consortium on Functional Proteomics (contract 031U108 by the German Federal Ministry for Science and Technology). From his previous background as group leader in pharmaceutical industry (Parke-Davies), Marius Ueffing pays specific attention to translational research. Project related activities: MU partners two funded FP5 projects focused on the molecular mechanisms of genetically inherited diseases (QLK6 –CT- 2000-00569; QLK6 –CT- 2001- 00385) and two projects in the 6th FW related to development and application of proteomic technology (INTERACTION PROTEOME, LSHG-CT-2003-505520), a Marie Curie Research and Training network RETNET (MRTN-CT-2003-504003). MU has a previous background as group leader in pharmaceutical industry (Parke-Davies) as well as in a University Medical Centre (LMU-Munich) He has a strong interest in translational research, which is reflected in advisory functions for Qiagen, Definiens, and Bayer USA. MU also serves on the board of the German Society for Proteome Research and the Steering Committee of the Helmholtz Society Research Program “Comparative Genomics in Health and Disease”
