"Slow Feature Analysis Yields a Rich Repertoire of Complex Cell Properties"

      Abstract:
Slow Feature Analysis (SFA) is an algorithm that we have developed based on the slowness learning principle. SFA 'learns' functions that extract slowly varying features from quickly varying high-dimensional input signals. Applied to 'natural' image sequences SFA learns functions that share many properties with complex cells in primary visual cortex, such as Gabor-like optimal stimuli and phase invariance. We also find units with no orientation selectivity, secondary response lobes, direction selectivity, end-inhibition, or side-inhibition. The results can be partially understood analytically based on variational calculus. I will briefly mention also some other applications of SFA in neural modelling.
