Tübingen as a Hotspot in Eye and Vision Research
In the latest issue of the “Laborjournal” from September 2021, the recent publication analysis of the years 2010-2019 in eye and vision research in German-speaking countries is published. The Department of Ophthalmology appears here with four of its most distinguished heads and thus occupies an excellent position among the TOP 30 most cited researchers.
The illustrious circle is led by Prof. Marius Ueffing in the 10th place with 4,580 citations in 150 articles, followed by Prof. Eberhart Zrenner in the 11th place with 4,129 citations in 151 articles. Prof. Karl U. Bartz-Schmidt, the medical director of the University Eye Hospital, follows on place 17th with 179 articles and 3,346 citations. The fourth in the quartet is Prof. Bernd Wissinger in 30th place with 91 publications and 2,596 citations.
"At eye level" is the title of the publication analysis 2021 in the laboratory journal and this is certainly true for ophthalmology made in Tübingen. No other location has more clinicians and scientists to offer. Together with the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and Vienna, this forms a focal point in the south of the German-speaking region. "We are very satisfied with our current visibility in the field," says Marius Ueffing the Director of the Institute for Ophthalmic Research in Tübingen.
With almost 2,600 citations in the analysis period from the year 2010 until 2019, the ticket for the thirty most-cited heads was booked. The most frequently cited keyword in eye research is Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), also one of the major research areas of Prof. Ueffing. He connected European AMD experts within the EU consortium EYE-RISK, leading to numerous new insights and publications in the field. Within the category of the top 10 most-cited original articles, Eberhart Zrenner from Tübingen appears in 9th place. His paper "Subretinal electronic chips allow blind patients to read letters and combine them to words" in the Proceedings of the Royal Society from 2011 has been cited 546 times so far.
To make it into the top 30 most-cited researchers, one had to have at least a significant number of publications in ophthalmology journals or be identifiable as an ophthalmologist by the institute's address. The Department of Ophthalmology in Tübingen is one of the top addresses in Germany.
