In our investigations of retinal responses to electrical stimulation, we have come learned of a handful of strategies by which it may be possible for a single electrode to selectively or at least preferentially stimulate chosen subtypes of the retinal ganglion cell population. We are now conducting preliminary experiments to test these potential stimulation strategies. In particular, it appears that it may be possible to differentially activate ON and OFF cells of the retina, which encode for increases and decreases in light, respectively. With this preliminary data we seek to win competitive funding awards to fully explore such novel electrical stimulation of the retina. The ultimate goal is to deliver more naturalistic experiences to retinal prosthesis implant patients.
