Eberhard-Dodt-Award for Sven Schumayer and Anna Nikolaidou at ISCEV 2025

Award-winning vision science: Bridging neurotech and ophthalmology at ISCEV 2025

Sven Schumayer and Anna Nikolaidou from the AG Applied Vision Research at the Institute for Ophthalmic Research, Centre for Ophthalmology, University of Tübingen, have both been honored with the prestigious Eberhard-Dodt-Award of the Neuro-Ophthalmological Society for their outstanding scientific contributions to the 62nd Annual Symposium of the International Society for Clinical Electrophysiology of Vision (ISCEV), held in Utrecht, Netherlands, in 2025.

Sven Schumayer, who is also affiliated with the Institute for Microsystems Technology at Furtwangen University, received the award for his poster presentation entitled:
"Preserved Ciliary Muscle Biopotentials Enable Artificial Lens Control and Near Vision Recovery in Long-Term Presbyopia."
His work, funded by the Carl Zeiss-Stiftung as part of its program "Breakthroughs at Universities 2020: Intelligent Solutions for an Ageing Society", demonstrates how residual biopotentials of the ciliary muscle can be harnessed to control artificial lenses and restore accommodation in presbyopic patients—a step toward neuro-electronic solutions for age-related vision loss.

Anna Nikolaidou received the award for her oral presentation:
"Seeing the Panda: P300 and Sweep VEP Assess Refractive and Cognitive Visual Acuity Simultaneously."
Her innovative approach combines visual evoked potentials and cognitive neuroscience with visual illusions to provide a dual assessment of optical and cognitive contributions to visual acuity.

The double recognition highlights the strength and interdisciplinary nature of the Applied Vision Research Group’s work at the interface of ophthalmology, electrophysiology, and neurotechnology.
