From Lab to Clinic: Retinal Research in Tübingen – Prof. Dr. Marius Ueffing

Europe’s largest online portal for ophthalmology "Eyefox", interviewed Prof. Marius Ueffing, director of the Institute for Ophthalmic Research Tübingen

How can we identify the molecular causes of retinal diseases and use this knowledge to develop new therapeutic approaches? In the new Eyefox interview, Prof. Dr. Marius Ueffing discusses methods and concepts — from proteomics and artificial intelligence to the close integration of research and clinical practice in Tübingen.

Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Marius Ueffing has been the director of the Research Institute of Ophthalmology at the University of Tübingen since 2011. Using state-of-the-art proteome analyses and AI-assisted image processing, his team deciphers the molecular mechanisms behind diseases such as age-related macular degeneration, hereditary retinopathies, and ciliopathies. In the interview, he explains how the close collaboration between laboratory research, clinical practice, and patient care is enabling the development of novel, mutation-independent therapies.

In 2022, Prof. Ueffing was elected to the Leopoldina, the German National Academy of Sciences.

In March 2025, after this interview was recorded, the Department of Ophthalmology in Tübingen received multi-million euro funding for innovative therapies targeting hereditary retinal diseases.

The interview was recorded during the DOG Congress in Berlin.
