« REVeyeVE » Project secures second Place at the 2024 Science2Start Awards
The "REVeyeVE" project conducted by Dr José Hurst and Dr Sven Schnichels from the Center for Ophthalmology in Tübingen wants to realize a pioneering technology with the potential to revolutionize ocular gene therapy. Its recognition at the Science2Start competition underscores the project's significance and innovative potential.
Tübingen, July 2024– This year's summer reception of BioRegio STERN Management GmbH, for the Science2Start Awards ceremony took place at the Tübingen Observatory, honoring outstanding ideas from scientists and entrepreneurs.
For the 15th time, an expert jury recognized particularly promising projects for economic implementation.
The "REVeyeVE" project conducted at the Center for Ophthalmology in Tübingen won an excellent second place. Led by Dr. Sven Schnichels and Dr. José Hurst (s. picture), the team developed "REVeyeVE," an innovative, controllable, and biodegradable nano propeller for ocular gene therapy.
Innovative Solution for Ocular Gene Therapy
Delivering gene therapeutics, such as RNA or DNA plasmids, into eye tissue is a significant challenge. Current therapies mainly rely on viral vectors, which often fail to achieve desired efficiency, to target the correct cells, or to avoid immune reactions. The preclinical research project "REVeyeVE" offers a promising, virus-free alternative.
REVeyeVE: Precision and Flexibility through Nano Propellers
The "REVeyeVE" system uses innovative nano propellers controlled by magnets to target gene therapeutics precisely to the retina. This technology provides a potential treatment for hereditary, previously untreatable retinal diseases.
Compared to existing therapies, the nano propellers are modifiable and flexible, allowing the transport of various types of RNA and large genes. Transfection efficiency is significantly higher with these nano propellers, which are also biodegradable and biologically compatible
