Molecular Biology of Retinal Degenerations

Our Mission

Marius Ueffing's group focuses on disease mechanisms in Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), Inherited Retinal Degenerations (RD) and Ciliopathies. Medical proteomics, bioanalytical strategies and high end quantitative mass spectrometric approaches are applied towards functional analysis of protein complexes, cellular signaling pathways and disease associated protein networks. High resolution imaging including STED and Electron-Microscopy is used to visualize cellular structures in the retina. Novel iPSC-based cellular and tissue-based co-culture models are developed as tools to analyze mechanisms of retinal degeneration and to test potential therapy approaches. Based on a holistic understanding of key systemic perturbations that cause disease, we aim to develop therapy options for retinal diseases that can be translated from pre-clinical proof-of-concept towards clinical trials.
